Usage

Washing it apart

Place a water bucket in the upper left slot and iron-bearing sand below it. When the sand and water are ready, the sand moves into the working slots. Iron sand appears in the middle output, plain sand below it, and the empty bucket above. Faint examples of a water bucket and iron-bearing sand mark the empty input slots. No heat is needed.

Behavior

The middle slots are the launder

Sand in the bright working slots can be recovered, but cannot be inserted directly.

It runs on poured water

A bucket refills the empty reservoir when a batch is ready. Its empty bucket immediately moves to the upper output, and the horizontal bar above the working sand shows the water remaining. Hoppers supply water buckets from above and iron-bearing sand from the sides; a hopper below collects all outputs.

In the real world

In western Japan the raw material was won by kanna-nagashi: sluicing a cut hillside into channels so the heavy magnetite settled out. The washing sluice is the wooden launder where that final dressing happened.

Differences in game

Satoyama does not model cutting the hillside or the chain of channels; the whole dressing step is one block.
