Ash Glaze

Wood ash, sand and clay ground together in water. The plainest glaze there is, and it fires to a soft milky white.

Usage

Setting it beside the body

Put it into the kiln with the platter body and Hagi ware comes out. Add the iron pigment beside it and you get Karatsu ware.

The base of the green glaze

The copper green glaze is this ash glaze milled again with copper in it.

In the real world

An ash glaze is plant ash ground in water with feldspar and clay. The lime and alkalis in the ash melt at kiln heat and cover the piece in a glassy skin.

Differences in game

Satoyama has no feldspar of its own and uses sand for the silica, and it does not distinguish which plants the ash came from.
