Ecological basis
Ume is a temperate East Asian tree traditionally planted around settlements on hills and lower mountain slopes. Meadows represent that upland open setting and keep it apart from cherry groves.
Usage
Planting the grove
One by the house, a few on the hill — with umeboshi, juice and vinegar all waiting, an early grove makes a rich storehouse.
