Rice pounded free of hull and bran in an usu. Not edible raw — cook it in a pot first.
The staple paddy crop. Plant seedlings into flooded soil; four growth stages, rising two blocks tall when heading. Mature plants drop rice and seedlings (Fortune adds seedlings), and reaping with a sickle adds straw. Wild rice grows in swamp shallows.

Ecological basis
Wild relatives close to cultivated rice grow in still or slow-moving tropical and subtropical wetlands. Swamp shallows represent that habitat; flowing rivers do not.
Usage
Cook it first
Not edible raw — the pot comes first. The grain also has its own roads: rice miso moromi and grain vinegar both take it uncooked.
Rice farming
The gateway to the staple. Plant seedlings in flooded soil; the rice goes to the pot, the seedlings back to the paddy — and a sickle adds straw for roofs and natto.
